NVFS Gala Raises $730,000+ for Our Vulnerable Neighbors

Among many passionate and inspiring moments at NVFS’ Road to Independence Gala last Friday evening, NVFS President and CEO Stephanie Berkowitz summarized the agency’s mission to more than 600 supporters, both longtime and new: “Together, we will continue to open doors of opportunity, create pathways to prosperity, and help children and families across our region realize their fullest potential. Together, we are permanently lifting families out of poverty, and creating a stronger, more vibrant community for all.”

Friday evening’s festivities also honored the tremendous impact that J. Hamilton Lambert and Karen Schaufeld have each had on Northern Virginia, as well as the personal success of Glenda, a former client and now NVFS employee, in finding stability and self-sufficiency through NVFS. (Watch her video .) Check out the recap of the Gala, plus the , and know that NVFS is grateful for the support of each and every one of you!

National Foster Care Month: Stories From Foster Parents

When Mandi Brown and her husband started the foster-care process with NVFS, they were worried about the stress and difficulty. But the NVFS social worker who came to visit them in their home “immediately put us at ease,” Mandi says. “By the middle of the homestudy, it felt like we were walking around chatting with a friend — a friend who wanted to make sure our toilets and electricity worked and that our medicine cabinets locked.”

The Browns had a “roller coaster” of a first year with their two foster daughters because of many road blocks, which included appeals from the biological parents.

“We survived with the help of the wonderful workers at NVFS,” says Mandi. “NVFS will always hold a special place in our hearts, not only because they united us with our daughters, but because they played such a special role in the first year we had with them.”

Thursday, June 2, may sound like it’ll just be an ordinary day.

It doesn’t have to be.

DoMore24 provides 24 hours of opportunities to support your favorite local nonprofit (NVFS, of course!). It’s a day not only to help NVFS win cash prizes for top fundraising, but to help raise awareness for NVFS.

You can also help by creating and posting a #Selfie4Good. Nonprofits in the lead for the most supporter selfies will win extra cash. Just snap a picture of yourself holding a sign (any size) that says “Do More 24,” and upload to Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #DoMore24 and the profile tag @nvfs (Twitter) or @Northern Virginia Family Service (Facebook).

Visit alfredogarrido.com/do-more-24 on June 2 to donate. Want to add a reminder to your Outlook calendar? Click here

From discovering the power of magnets to creating musical instruments, clients have benefitted from the wonderful impact of corporate volunteers from companies such as  and . Their volunteer activities have helped make education fun for NVFS Head Start students! As NVFS Board Member Douglas Koelemay said of Transurban, “This is such an inspiring partnership of a great company contributing to the future of the region in so many ways.”

U.S. Postal Service Delivers the Food!

Last week, Manassas Post Office employees helped “Stamp Out Hunger” by collecting more than 10,000 pounds of food for SERVE’s Hunger Resource Center! When schools close for summer, kids receiving free or reduced meals lose that benefit, placing low-income families under further stress. Many thanks to USPS staff for playing an incredible role in helping local families!
