How a Family Connects to Essential Resources and Thrives Through NVFS

Ada, mother of three boys, has successfully secured full-time, benefitted employment near her home, thanks to a journey made possible by connections to essential resources through NVFS.

It has only been a few years since Ada was attending an alternative high school and dependent on her then-husband’s low income. Her initial appointment with NVFS, for low-cost dental assistance, would eventually connect Ada not only with a dentist but also – thanks to the comprehensive, integrated nature of NVFS services – emergency food supplies, professional job training and mental health counseling.

Ada has turned her life around, and now says, “I can give to the community what I once received.”

Want to help the hungry, get your creative engineering on, and maybe even win prizes? September is Anti-Hunger Month, and NVFS is holding a “Canstruction” competition! NVFS provides food assistance for more than 700 families each month, in addition to its 92 shelter residents at SERVE, and we need your help!

Step 1: Collect canned and boxed foods.

Step 2: “Canstruct”! There are prizes in 3 categories: Most Creative, Most Popular and Tallest.

Step 3: Take a photo of your creation and email it with your name(s) to Victoria Marcos at vmarcos@alfredogarrido.com. Deadline for submissions is Friday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m.

Step 4: Deliver your donations to either of the NVFS locations listed here.

Top Volunteer Needs at SERVE

Make a difference at SERVE in Manassas! Here are three ways you can help:

1. Recover food from local businesses and deliver it to those in need. Every day in Northern Virginia, food goes to waste while families go hungry. You can help! Food Recovery Drivers are needed weekday mornings, especially Mondays, to transport donations from local stores/restaurants to SERVE’s Hunger Resource Center. Volunteers must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Drivers must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license. Teens can ride with drivers to assist.

2. Serve a holiday meal. The holiday season is right around the corner! Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve meals on Labor Day, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Meals may be brought in or prepared onsite. Please note that volunteers must supply all ingredients. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

3. Help a homeless individual find – and keep a job. Transportation is one of the biggest barriers to employment for the homeless. You can help solve this problem by being a Shelter Services Driver. Volunteers are needed weekdays to drive clients in the SERVE passenger van to jobs, interviews and important appointments. Training is provided! Drivers must be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license.
